Driving Team Volunteer Standards

Please review the following standards for volunteers of the Driving Team ministry.

Safety First: Adhere strictly to all state and local traffic laws and regulations while operating your personal vehicle for ministry purposes. Prioritize the safety of passengers, pedestrians, and other road users at all times. Avoid distractions while driving, including but not limited to mobile phone use (handheld or hands-free), eating, or complex adjustments to vehicle controls. Pull over safely if an action requires significant attention. Conduct a basic visual inspection of your vehicle (tires, lights, signals) before each trip. Do not proceed with a driving task if you have any safety concerns. Never operate a vehicle if feeling fatigued, unwell, or under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs, or any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) that may impair driving ability. Ensure all passengers utilize seat belts as required by law. Scope of Driving: Only perform driving tasks assigned by Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church (“FVUMC”) and within the agreed-upon schedule and route. Do not deviate significantly without authorization, except in emergencies. Follow all specific instructions provided by FVUMC regarding pick-up, drop-off, and any necessary assistance when transporting individuals. Driving Conduct and Vehicle Care: Operate your personal vehicle courteously and defensively, representing FVUMC positively in the community. Maintain punctuality for scheduled pick-ups and drop-offs, communicating any anticipated delays promptly to FVUMC and the passenger. Maintain your personal vehicle used for ministry purposes in safe operating condition according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Ensure it is kept reasonably clean when transporting individuals for the ministry. Supervision and Communication: Follow the direction of FVUMC regarding routes, schedules, and procedures. Maintain clear and open communication with FVUMC and other volunteers as needed. Promptly report any problems, delays, concerns, or changes related to driving duties or vehicle status to FVUMC. Report any traffic citations, incidents, accidents, or injuries immediately to FVUMC, regardless of severity, that occur while performing ministry duties. Driver's License, Insurance, and Vehicle Maintenance: Maintain a valid, current driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle being operated. Inform FVUMC immediately if your driver’s license is renewed, suspended, lapses without renewal, or is revoked. Provide a copy of your current license to FVUMC upon request. Maintain at least the state minimum required auto liability insurance coverage on the personal vehicle used for ministry purposes. Provide proof of current insurance to FVUMC upon request. Inform FVUMC immediately if your insurance coverage changes or is canceled. Maintain your personal vehicle used for ministry activities in accordance with the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule to ensure safe and reliable operation. Professional Conduct: Treat passengers of services and the public with respect, compassion, and sensitivity at all times. Maintain a professional demeanor while performing driving duties, including appropriate language and attire. Respect the confidentiality and privacy of individuals being transported. Adherence to Guidelines: Follow all verbal and written guidelines provided by FVUMC regarding driving procedures and ministry protocols. Participate in any required driver safety briefings or training sessions organized by FVUMC. Complete any required documentation related to driving activities, such as mileage logs or incident reports, accurately and promptly as requested by FVUMC. Criminal Convictions and Vehicle Offenses: Do not participate in this ministry as a volunteer if you have been convicted of any felony during the 10 year period preceding the date you are scheduled to volunteer or if you have been convicted of any crime in the preceding 10 years which is a violent crime (e.g. assault), a sex offense, a crime against vulnerable persons (e.g. child, person with a disability, or senior citizens), or a crime that involves the unlawful taking or conversion of another’s property (e.g. larceny, shoplifting, or embezzlement). Do not participate in this ministry as a volunteer if your driving privileges are suspended or revoked or if you have been determined by a court to have committed any of the following offenses in the preceding three year period: committing any alcohol or drug-related offense, refusing to submit to a blood alcohol test, failing to stop for an accident, failing to report an accident, leaving the scene of an accident, injury or death of another arising out of the use of a vehicle, reckless or careless driving, racing, passing a stopped school bus, possession of a controlled substance while operating a vehicle, making a false accident report, attempting to elude a police officer, speeding 10 or more miles per hour over the posted speed limit on two or more occasions, or speeding 20 or more miles per hour over the posted speed limit on one or more occasions. By registering for this ministry as a volunteer and continuing to participate, you consent to FVUMC obtaining background check reports and motor vehicle reports for the purpose of determining your eligibility for participating in this ministry. Volunteer Release and Waiver of Liability

Please review and sign this Volunteer Release and Waiver of Liability. If you are a minor, your parent or legal guardian previously named should sign.

Scope of Relationship. I desire to provide volunteer services for Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church, Inc. (“FVUMC”). I understand that the scope of my relationship with FVUMC is limited to a volunteer position. No compensation will be provided in return for services provided by me, nor will I be entitled to any employee benefits. I understand that I am responsible for my own insurance coverage in the event of personal injury or illness as a result of my volunteer services to FVUMC. Release and Waiver. I hereby release and forever discharge and hold harmless FVUMC, its successors and assigns, its volunteers, and their respective partners, agents, operators, managers, employees, and representatives (“Released Parties”) from any and all claims I may have or hereinafter have for any injury, illness, temporary or permanent disability, death, damages, liabilities, expenses and/or causes of action, now known or hereinafter known in any jurisdiction in the world, attributable or relating in any manner to my service as a volunteer, whether caused by the negligence of the Released Parties or by any other reason. I acknowledge and agree that this Volunteer Release and Waiver of Liability is intended to be, and is, a complete release of any responsibility of the Released Parties for any and all personal injuries, illness, temporary or permanent disability, death, and/or property damage sustained by me as a result of my volunteer services. No Insurance Required. I understand that FVUMC is not required to provide medical, health, automotive, or disability benefits or insurance, nor is FVUMC required to provide any financial or other assistance, in the event of injury, illness, disability, death, or property damage related to my volunteer services. Medical Treatment. I hereby release and forever discharge FVUMC from any claim whatsoever which arises or may hereafter arise on account of any medical treatment or services, including first-aid or similar services, rendered in connection with my volunteer services. Assumption of Risk. I understand and acknowledge that participation in volunteer activities involves certain risks, including but not limited to property damage, serious injury, illness, temporary or permanent disability, or death. I understand that operating a motor vehicle on public roads involves inherent and significant risks, including without limitation traffic accidents, variable road conditions, and actions committed by other drivers. I understand that in the event of injury or illness, neither the volunteers nor FVUMC are required to provide medical services, and any injury or illness sustained may be compounded by negligent or delayed medical service. I AM VOLUNTARILY PARTICIPATING IN SUCH ACTIVITIES WITH KNOWLEDGE OF THE DANGER INVOLVED, AND I AGREE TO ACCEPT ALL RISKS OF PARTICIPATION, INCLUDING THE RISK OF INJURY, ILLNESS, TEMPORARY OR PERMANENT DISABILITY, DEATH, OR PROPERTY DAMAGE. Indemnification. I agree to indemnify and hold harmless FVUMC for all claims, accusations, notices, judgments, rulings, liabilities or expenses arising out of my actions, inactions, errors, acts, or omissions as a volunteer. Covenant Not to Sue. I agree, for myself and all my heirs, successors and assigns, not to sue the Released Parties or initiate or assist in the prosecution of any claim for damages or cause of action against the Released Parties which I or my heirs may have as a result of any personal injury, illness, temporary or permanent disability, death or property damage I may sustain as a result of my services as a volunteer. Publicity Release. I hereby grant to FVUMC all rights, title, and interest in and to any and all photographic images and video or audio recordings made during my volunteer activities with FVUMC, including but not limited to any royalties, proceeds or other benefits from such photographs or recordings. I grant permission to use my image in print, video, web, social and/or digital media by FVUMC. Miscellaneous. I understand that this document is a contract which grants certain rights to, and eliminates the liability of, FVUMC and the other Released Parties. This Volunteer Release and Waiver of Liability shall be governed by the laws of the State of North Carolina. This Volunteer Release and Waiver of Liability is intended to be as broad and inclusive as permitted by law. In the event any provision of this Volunteer Release and Waiver of Liability shall be held to be invalid by any court of competent jurisdiction, the invalidity of such provision shall not otherwise affect the remaining provisions of this agreement, which shall continue to be enforceable.
