History of FVUMC

Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church has been cultivating community since 1903. What began as a small gathering of faithful neighbors more than a century ago has grown into a vibrant, multigenerational congregation rooted in grace, connection, and purpose.

Over the decades, FVUMC has remained anchored in the Wesleyan tradition—holding fast to a theology of grace, the authority of Scripture, and the call to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Throughout its history, FVUMC has responded to the needs of the local community with compassion and creativity. From its earliest days to today, the church has offered a spiritual home for families, individuals, and seekers, welcoming all who long for belonging, support, and deeper connection with God and one another.

Across generations, FVUMC has continued to evolve, launching new ministries, forming small groups, and building partnerships that reflect its ongoing commitment to serve both its congregation and its neighbors.

Whether through long-standing Bible studies, dynamic children’s programs, or outreach efforts that meet people in moments of both joy and struggle, FVUMC’s mission has remained steady: to transform lives through the power of God’s love and to build a community that lives out that love in the world.

Our Denomination

The United Methodist Church

As a denomination, The United Methodist Church is a worldwide connection of about 10 million members in more than 100 countries, including Africa, Asia, Europe, and the United States. United Methodists are people of God who share a common mission and values.

 

The UMC Vision

The United Methodist Church forms disciples of Jesus Christ who, empowered by the Holy Spirit, love boldly, serve joyfully, and lead courageously in local communities and worldwide connections.

This vision statement complements the Church’s longstanding mission statement, inspired by Matthew 28:18-20: “The mission of The United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.”

The vision encourages United Methodists to embody the following principles:

  • Love Boldly: Passionately love God and, like Jesus, embrace and include people of every age, nation, race, gender and walk of life.   Inspired by Matthew 22:37-39 and John 13:34-35
  • Serve Joyfully: With a Christ-like heart, journey alongside the most vulnerable, offering care and compassion with joy.   Inspired by Psalm 100:1, Nehemiah 8:10, John 13:14-15 and 1 Peter 4:10
  • Lead Courageously: Follow Jesus’ example by resisting and dismantling all systems of evil, injustice, and oppression, striving for peace, justice and reconciliation. Inspired by Joshua 1:9 and Ephesians 6:10

Our Beliefs

At FVUMC, our faith is grounded in the life, teachings, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We believe in the transforming power of God’s grace and the enduring work of the Holy Spirit in our lives and our world.

As part of The United Methodist Church, we hold to a Wesleyan understanding of faith that emphasizes Scripture, tradition, reason, and experience as vital sources of wisdom and guidance.

We affirm that God’s love is for all people, and we are committed to being a church where everyone is welcomed, valued, and invited to grow in faith. Our journey is one of healing, restoration, and renewal—both personally and collectively—as we respond to God’s call to love and serve.

At FVUMC, we live out our disciple-making mission by walking alongside one another in faith, offering meaningful worship, nurturing spiritual formation, and engaging in service that brings hope to our community and beyond.
