Racial Equity Team – An Invitation to Listen

As our Racial Equity Team continues to work on what justice looks like for our church and community, they would like to invite you to watch the following video about Racism and the Church.

This video gives us an opportunity to listen to our black brothers and sisters as they share their lived experiences. As a people of faith, it is important to practice the spiritual discipline of listening with open hearts and open minds, especially to the voices that are often unheard or silenced. We invite everyone to join us in this holy practice of listening today.

Below the video, there are links to helpful resources for parents.

Family Resources for Talking about Racism

With the recent events across the country, there has been lots of discussion surrounding the issues of racial injustice and systemic racism in our society. In our UMC baptismal vows, we commit ourselves as Christians to "resist evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves." As people of faith, it is important to engage in these conversations and ensure we are doing our part in combating racism in all its forms.

Part of this difficult work is to make sure we resist the temptation to be silent - we should not avoid conversations regarding race as hard as it may be. And like our faith, a lot of the foundational work begins in our homes with our family.Alex Lee, Director of Youth & Family Ministries (alex@fvumc.org) put together a variety of resources to help youth and families engage in some of these difficult conversations about the intersection of justice and Christianity.
