What do you think of when you hear the word “homeless”? An older, scruffy man sleeping on a park bench? A frail woman pushing a shopping cart? What about the families with children?
Homeless families are often hidden from our view—they are living in shelters, cars, campgrounds, or doubled up in overcrowded apartments.
Did you know:
- The poverty line for a family of four is $24,300.
- A worker needs to earn $11.70/hour to reach the poverty level for a family of four.
- A renter needs to earn $21.21/hour to afford a two-bedroom rental in the U.S.
- Two-thirds of poor children live in families in which at least one family member works.
- The three most cited reasons for family homelessness are: 1) Lack of affordable housing, 2) unemployment, and 3) poverty.
The mission of Family Promise is to help homeless and low-income families achieve sustainable independence through a community-based response. Working together, they provide temporary housing, meals, and services to family members. It remains one of only two emergency shelters in Wake County that allows families to stay together, regardless of the ages and genders of the children and parents, sparing parents the difficult choice between keeping families together and finding a safe place for their children to sleep.
FVUMC serves as a host church 3 times per year. This year we are hosting May 27-June 3; July 22-29; and Nov. 25–Dec. 1.
We need overnight hosts, evening hosts, van drivers, people to provide a meal, people to set-up and break down the rooms.
