YOU are invited to join the happiest place on Monday evenings (otherwise known as the FVUMC Centrum) as a one-on-one weekly tutor with a K-5 scholar OR as a rotating food team member supporting our literacy program.
For many years, FVUMC has partnered with other area churches and organizations to provide a Family Literacy program for young students. Fuquay-Varina Elementary School educators identify K-5 students who will benefit from our “family literacy model”, and each week, students and their families share in dinner and table fellowship with tutors while developing informal conversational skills and experiencing relationship-building.
To support the entire family, this program includes set-apart time for the parents. As scholars and tutors interact, parents participate in experiences designed to give them moments of fun and learning while they build a network of community and school friendships.
Weekly tutors are provided with training and an abundance of literacy resources, including games and books. All volunteers also receive Safe Sanctuaries training and are required to complete a background check as part of the onboarding process. Tutors are invited to eat with their students and their families, and then engage in reading, literacy activities, and community-building activities with their scholars. The commitment is Monday nights during the school year from 5:00 – 6:30 pm.
Food teams serve on a rotating basis throughout the semester and are provided with details about any dietary restrictions and meal planning recommendations.
We are excited to have many returning volunteers already on board and ready to serve this 2024-25 school year – please feel welcome to contact us and join our team! With more team members, we will be able to transform the lives of more students, parents, and teachers in our community.
